Al in the News

Almost every day, it seems, I am in the news for something, usually about journalism trends or ethics. I try to limit my comments to issues around journalism, not politics.
I get a lot of calls from college students working on term papers, so maybe these links will help them. Journalists working on deadline should call 727-821-9494. Make sure you tell the Poynter operator you are on deadline

Chicago Tribune-Illinois opens courts to cameras, “It is a big deal, and it’s not just a big deal for the media,” Tompkins said. “My excitement isn’t just for the newsrooms that might benefit from this, but it’s for the citizens who now will have free access to something that they were just hallway observers for.”

Those who are skeptical about allowing cameras inside courtrooms often raise concerns about whether the cameras could be a distraction or encourage defense attorneys, prosecutors and judges to play to the television audience.

But Tompkins said that years of recording trials in other states have proved those concerns to be largely unfounded. “There’s no reason to believe that a judge cannot keep decorum in a courtroom,” he said.
