The low $300 tuition for this seminar is made possible by a generous grant from The Buck Foundation.
Join The Poynter Institute and Investigative Reporters and Editors for an intensive, practical hands-on workshop to teach journalists how to investigate and report on their local governments. The workshop is especially focused toward newsrooms that do not have big budgets or staffs to produce exhaustive projects.
We will accept multiple journalists from the same newsroom. We welcome journalism educators and grad students!

Why THIS Seminar?
This week, IRE and the research firm AR & D produced a presentation showing how investigative reporting can be a key to building local news audiences. Among the findings were that newsrooms need training in Computer Assisted Reporting. The Poynter ? IRE seminar has built in Hands On sessions to teach you how to work with databases and spreadsheets. The research found stations want training in Data Visualization so we built in special Hands On training to address that need. And you want and need hard-hitting stories which is why our faculty and visiting faculty are among the best investigative journalists in the business. You need training on how to use social media and online resources. We have you covered, see our schedule.
The AR & D survey said one of the biggest problems you face is limited staff size that does not allow you to take days or weeks on projects. That is why IRE and Poynter designed this seminar to speak to the needs of smaller and medium sized newsrooms who often turn investigative stories in a daily turn deadline.
